About Michael
I'm Michael Shurance, a debate coach based in Orange County. I've competed in several debate formats and have excelled, and I've taught students and led them to top rankings and top place finishes. My coaching philosophy is making students better advocates, better thinkers, and better people.
Services
Coaching is a supplement to what your student's team already does. Pick the format that fits.
Lincoln-Douglas Debate
A one-on-one debate where two people go head to head on a topic released in advance. Offered at both the high school and college levels; the college version, NFA-LD, debates one policy topic for the whole year using researched evidence.
Parliamentary Debate
Two-person teams debate a topic that is announced only about 20 minutes before the round. Debaters think on their feet and build arguments with their partner using logic and general knowledge.
IPDA
A one-on-one debate in a plain-spoken style meant for everyday audiences. Debaters get a topic about 30 minutes before the round and prepare on their own.
Team Policy
Two-person teams debate one policy question for the whole year, such as whether the government should adopt a certain program or law. It relies on heavy research and well-supported evidence.
Public Forum
Two-person teams debate a current-events topic that usually changes every month, in a style any everyday listener can follow. Teams back up their points with evidence and question each other directly in short "crossfire" exchanges.
Any Debate Format
Don't see your event? I've judged Congress, British Parliamentary, World Schools, and more, so I already know the rules and can coach you on how to win.
Novice reps
1:1 work for newer debaters who want more practice than team time allows.
Judge adaptation
Learn to read a panel and adjust style, speed, and framing for different judges.
Rhetoric & Persuasion
Learn to build arguments that actually move people: clear structure, strong evidence, and delivery that makes judges and audiences want to agree with you.

“Michael is by far one of my favorite coaches I've ever had for debate. I've been doing it for six years. His understanding of the arguments and strategies is mind-blowing, and his skill to articulate the why behind something is very helpful. Michael is excellent at breaking down seemingly scary or complex target arguments into a few simple and easy to understand concepts.”
Jonathan, current student
“My experience with Coach Michael has been very beneficial in the way I speak in debate intellectually while also applying those skills into my social life. He has always provided me with the best feedback and has helped me with those needed improvements.”
Cassidy, current student
“Coach Michael has always been there for me and my classmates. He's always willing to explain and always available to help students understand hard and complex situations and strategies.”
Sophia, former student
